What I Liked:
- Sharp Graphics and Great Sound
- Fantastic Writing And Voice Acting
- For The Asking Price, There Sure Is A Lot Of Game Here
- Chopped Up Nature Of Episodes Helps The Story Keep Great Pacing.
What I Disliked:
- As With All Adventure Games, Replay Value Is An Issue
The Monkey Island series has been around for plenty of years, and it was really only a matter of time before Telltale’s addition to the series made it’s way onto PSN. I’m pleased to report that Tales of Monkey Island makes the jump onto the PS3 with no problems whatsoever, and has picked up an extremely attractive price point in the process, with the complete season on PSN coming in at $15 less than the asking price on Telltale’s site. Suffice to say, it’s well worth the cash.
If you’ve ever played a Monkey Island game, you know exactly what to expect here, with sharp writing and fantastic voice acting underpinning solid adventuring mechanics. And this is totally what you’ll get with Tales of Monkey Island. However, if you haven’t come to the series before, I’d recommend picking up Monkey Island 1 Special Edition from the PSN and finishing that one before attempting this one. There’s plenty of in jokes and moments that fans of the series will appreciate. But don’t worry if you’re a newcomer to the series with this game, as it’s pretty easy to pick up who all the characters are within 10 minutes, and the game introduces so many new characters, that newcomers and fans of the series alike will be getting to know these new folks at pretty much the same pace as each other.
The game itself is your traditional adventure game, with solid puzzles helping to drive the narrative forward, and the episodic nature of this series (you get all the episodes at once, so don’t worry about being left in the dark for a month between episodes. No down time here!) means that each chunk of game has a smaller narrative arc, perfect for little sessions, where you can just pick up the game, play an episode for a couple of hours, and experience a fairly self-contained story (though there are a few cliff-hangers here and there). The game is perfect for smaller play sessions, though, as with all adventure games, you won’t feel an overwhelming urge to come back to it once you’ve finished it, though, if you’re trophy inclined, you may want to come back and find any ones that you’ve missed.
However, I can’t say enough good things about Tales of Monkey Island. The pacing is perfect, the game performs flawlessly on the system, and, above all, it’s hilarious. I really can’t recommend this game enough, and at the price they’re selling it for on the store, it’s an absolute steal. Buy It, you deserve to be treated.
