5pb. have announced a release date for the western version of Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds on PS Vita. The side-scrolling beat ’em up will launch on July 29th in North America, with Europe getting it on the 30th. South Korea will see a release on August 1st. 5pb. didn’t share pricing details, but the Xbox 360 version is currently priced at $9.99. The Japanese PS Vita version launched in March at ¥1,296 (~$13).
The process for releasing the game globally wasn’t an easy one according to producer Masaki Sakari. As this was 5pb.’s first global release on the PlayStation Store, the company was unprepared for the differences in regional certification requirements. Sakari specifically called out Sony Computer Entertainment Europe as being unreceptive to bending the rules to accommodate their needs. He states that this experience will only help the company in the future. I think it’s important to mention that a PS4 port of Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is currently in development. 5pb. is also looking into the possibility of releasing Phantom Breaker Extra internationally. This is an expanded version of the fighting game which inspired the Battle Grounds beat ’em up. Those interested are encouraged to fill out this survey.
Timed alongside the western release, 5pb. will be issuing a new patch for Japanese players.
Note: Trailer is from the Xbox 360 version.
