Nicalis, developers of Cave Story, have announced that their newest game, 2D action-platformer 1001 Spikes will be releasing on June 3rd for $14.99 for PS4 and Vita, and will support cross-buy.
As Aban Hawkins, you discover the lost and forgotten treasures of Ukampa in South America while searching for your estranged father, world-famous archaeologist Jim Hawkins. Before he disappeared, he left his daughter Tina with a map leading to the ruins of this treasure.
The game will take you to the “frozen tundra of the antarctic, undiscovered temple ruins, and the vast caverns of South America” while searching for your father.
Nicalis mentions the game is “tough-as-nails” and includes sharp controls and “clever-yet-insidious” game design. Visuals are 8-bit inspired, with a current gen feel.
There are close to two dozen unlockable characters, each with different abilities. Some of the characters include Curly Brace, from Cave Story, and Commander Video, from the Bit.Trip series of games.
There are are over 100 stages and the game features multiple endings. The game also supports single and simultaneous 2-4 player co-op and versus multiplayer.
