PSM Quick Play: You Are The Ref & You Are The Umpire

‘PSM Quick Play‘ are impressions from newly released PlayStation Mobile titles and are based on roughly 20 minutes or more of playtime. Full reviews are available at a later date.
Hot off the heels of last week’s PSM quiz title, QuizQuizQuiz, Four Door Lemon has released two new quiz games. The catch this time is that they are specific to just one topic, either Soccer (read: Football if you are not in US) or Cricket. Each of these games are based off the You Are The… comic strips that were published in the sports section of the British newspaper The Observer.
You Are The Ref
$3.49 – Tested on Sony Tablet S (Game provided by Publisher)
First up we have You Are The Ref, where as you might have guessed you have to answer questions about Soccer. The game will portray different scenarios that could happen during a soccer match and it is up to you to correctly answer them. Each question has some rather cool artwork to go along with it and some of them are pretty comical. I really enjoy the player portraits.
There are three different game modes, Sudden Death, Assessment, and Name That Player. You can probably guess that in Sudden Death once you get a question wrong the game is over. All of your questions are added up and the total time taken is used to factor into a score. The game does support high scores, but they are local only (PSM restriction at this time, Four Door Lemon has said that they will likely patch in leaderboard support if and when it becomes available.) Assessment has you doing the same thing, expect this time you can get questions wrong. Name The Player gives you a portrait of a famous footballer and you have to correctly guess who it is.
I should probably mention that the questions where made by Keith Hackett, who I can tell by googling his name is a pretty big deal in the soccer referee world. All in all this might be a pretty cool game for anyone who is really into soccer. The scenarios they give you are varied and I really dig the art.
Hot: I like that each question has original art
Not: Might be a little pricey unless you are a huge soccer fan

You Are The Umpire
$3.49 – Tested on Sony Tablet S (Game provided by Publisher)
I will just get this out of the way now… I know NOTHING about cricket. I couldn’t tell you what “signaling wide” means or what a “wicketkeeper” is. The game is very much the same product as You Are The Ref. All 3 games modes are present from YATR, except soccer situations are replaced with cricket ones.
I do like that there are very detailed descriptions as to what each ruling is. There was one question where John Holder (a famous cricketer and umpire) had a real world example of when a game had something like the question. I guess if you want to learn the rules of cricket this might be something that you want to check out. But other than that or you if you are a die-hard cricket fan, I can’t really recommend this.
Hot: Once again, great artwork for each question
Not: Not knowing anything about Cricket, I was totally lost
